White tropical flower – White Gardenia
The White Gardenia (Gardenia thunbergia) is a stylish flowering shrub or small tree that produces pure white flowers. This plant is not only kept for its beauty; the white tropical flowers are also famous for their attractive scent. The scent is especially noticeable during the night. After the bloom, decorative fruits will form. The white tropical flowers of this plant are showy and will usually reach a diameter of at least 3 inches. They open up from gracefully furled buds of a creamy-green shade. The corolla can reach a size of 12 centimetres. In a healthy White Gardenia, a profusion of flowers will be produced throughout the entire summer season. In the southern hemisphere, the white tropical flowers of the gardenia can be enjoyed from October to March, with January-March being the peak season. Moths like gardenias, and are suspected to be the animals responsible for the pollination. The White Gardenia is also known as Forest Gardenia and Wild Gardenia. It is native to the eastern coast of South Africa, from Eastern Cape to the north of KwaZulu-Natal. The fruits are eaten by elephants, buffalos and other large herbivore animals and the seeds pass through the digestive system without being digested.
White tropical flower – White bougainvillea
If you wish to include a profusion of white tropical flowers in your garden, you can for instance opt for a white bougainvillea. Bougainvillea is available in many different colours and shades, from deep crimson to pale white. The Bougainvilleas are native to tropical and subtropical parts of South America; from Brazil to southern Argentina. The name Bougainvillea honours French admiral Louise Antoine de Bougainville who allegedly was the first European to notice the plant. The bougainvillea is a thorny vine that can easily cover a house wall or fence; the tallest Bougainvilleas are over 10 metres. If you live in an area subjected to a dry season, the Bougainvillea will shed its leaves annually unless you water it. When planted in more humid conditions, the Bougainvillea is an evergreen vine. The true Bougainvillea flowers are very small, but each cluster of three flowers is protected by 3-6 bracts that surrounds the cluster and attracts pollinators.
White tropical flower – Phalaenopsisorchid
Phalaenopsisis a genus in the orchid family Orchidaceae. Within this genus, you can find a rich assortment of differently coloured orchid species and hybrids – including several attractive white orchids and white orchids with pastel shades. Orchids from this genus are easy to care for compared to most other orchids and the white tropical flowers found on a Phalaenopsis orchid can last for months. With the right care, it can even produce white tropical flowers more than once a year. It is important to avoid giving your orchid too much water or leaving it standing in a soggy medium. In the wild, these orchids grow attached to stones and branches and they are therefore ill-equipped to deal with damp roots. Phalaenopsis orchids are also known as Moth Orchids. They hail from Asia and northern Australia.
White tropical flower – Datura
Datura is a genus of flowering plants with large, trumpet shaped flowers. When searching for white tropical flowers for your garden, you can have your pick among the several different white varieties of Datura. Daturas are vigorous plants that can reach a height of 3 metres. The “trumpets” can grow up to 20 centimetres long and be 12 centimetres broad at the mouth. The trumpets are erected or spreading and will eventually produce a spiny capsule filled with seeds. It is hard to know the original distribution of the Datura species, since they have been cultivated by man for so long. Botanists suggest that they hail from Mexico and the surrounding countries, from southern United States to mid-South America. The richest profusion of Datura species is found in Mexico. Datura is known by many different names, including Angel's trumpet, Devil's trumpet, Pricklyburr and Thorn-apple.The name Datura is derived from the Hindi word dhatūrā which means thorny apple.
