Tropical flower – Bougainvillea
The Bougainvillea is named after a French admiral in the French navy who discovered this tropical flower in Brazil 1768. It can be found in the tropical and subtropical parts of South America and is a thorny and woody vine that can become at most 40 feet (12 meters) tall, climbing upwards on other plants. Although it mostly is evergreen, this tropical flower can actually shed its leaves and survive if there is a dry season. Known for its wide variety of colors, becoming either pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white or yellow, the Bougainvillea has become a widely appreciated tropical flower all over the world.
You can find a picture of a bougainvillea at the bottom of this page.
Tropical flower – Red Ginger
The Red Ginger is a tropical flower with a very special look. Originally from Malaysia the Red Ginger can nowadays be found in many Central American nations and also in Belize, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Also known as Ostrich Plume and Pink Cone Ginger, this tropical flower might seem to bloom long before it actually does. Looking like a brightly coloured and soft pine cones, it is actually just the white top that is the actual flower.
Tropical flower – Anthurium
The Anthurium was discovered by the Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott and can mostly be found in the wet tropical mountain forests of South-Central America. The leaves of this tropical flower can come in lots of different shapes and can be found growing out of the top of the rather short stem. The extremely small flowers are densely packed on a sort of spike and come on a long variety of colours. Just below the flower there usually is a leathery leaf called a spathe. This spathe is the most impressive part as it usually is brightly colored and changes color over time. This tropical flower has a wonderful exotic scent and can be a fine addition indoors.
Tropical flower – Heliconia
The Heliconia is a genus of tropical flowers that can be found in the tropical parts of America and on some of the Pacific Ocean islands. A common name for the Heliconia is lobster-claw or sometimes false bird-of-paradise, this because a group of flowers most often resembles claws or bird wings. The leaves can be quite large and the flowers grow on erect or drooping panicles. Although the fleshy and brightly colored panicles are a part of the tropical flower, the real flower can be found peeking out of the centre of it, making it suitable for hummingbirds to feed on.
